Safety Tips for Tattoo Artists

  • Wash hands thoroughly and inspect for cuts or abrasions, bandaging any that are found.
  • Keep nails trimmed to reduce glove punctures. Trim hangnails.
  • If lesions, allergic rashes, etc. are present on hands, let these heal before returning to work
  • Check gloves for tears or pinholes during tattooing. Petroleum based ointments can compromise latex integrity
  • Pour ink in advance while wearing clean gloves, keeping ink bottle caps and rims uncontaminated
  • When rinsing tubes between color changes, do not blow excess water from tubes. Pat dry.
  • Apply soap to client’s skin with clean tissue. Avoid spraying soap to keep blood from becoming airborne.
  • Any medical grade pens used for drawing on patient’s skin should be disposed of or given to client
